Although Virat Kohli did not win any ICC trophies as a captain, he had sensational stats as the captain of the Indian Cricket Team. He was quite aggressive as a captain and changed the approach with which Indian team went about their business.
Former batting coach of India, Sanjay Bangar feels that Kohli should have continued for longer period as the captain of Team India. He feels that Kohli should have at least captained India in Test cricket for much longer period of time.
“I personally feel that he (Kohli) should have continued slightly for longer as a Test captain. He probably captained India in 65 (sic. 68) Test matches, and one of the things I feel is that he could have probably continued as a Test captain for a longer period,” Sanjay Bangar said appearing on The Rao Podcast.

Virat Kohli decided to step down from T20I captaincy after the T20 World Cup in 2021 but wanted to continue in ODI and Test cricket. However, ahead of the tour against South Africa, he was sacked from ODI captaincy as well and the limited overs captaincy was given to Rohit Sharma, citing reasons that there can’t be two captains in white ball cricket for India.
There was also war of words between the then BCCI president, Sourav Ganguly, and Kohli himself. Ganguly stated that Kohli was informed before hand about the decision. However, Kohli insisted that he was not informed prior hand and the decision was taken without any discussions.
Ganguly said that if Kohli decided to leave T20I captaincy then he has to leave ODI captaincy as well. However, Kohli stated that he was not told any such thing when he decided to leave T20I captaincy.
After the Test series against South Africa, he stepped down from Test captaincy as well. Kohli definitely was the best ever Test captain that India has ever had and the decision to call it quits from Test captaincy came as a surprise to everyone.
