England appoint Brendon McCullum as the Head Coach of the white-ball team

England have appointed the new head coach of the Limited-overs team. They have given the duty to the head coach of the Test team, Brendon McCullum. McCullum has been in the position for 2 years and rejuvenated the Test side with his aggressive approach.

With the appointment of McCullum in limited overs team, they move away from the split-coaching system. The contract of the former New Zealand captain has been extended till 2027 and he will take the reigns of the limited overs team from England’s tour of India, in the start of 2025.

Managing Director of England men’s cricket Rob Key stated that he is very happy that McCullum has decided to take over the team in both the formats. He is also ready with the coaching panel to react and handle all the challenges that England Cricket is set to face in the upcoming days. Key also said that England’s limited-overs performances have degraded due to the constant clashes in the two formats.

On Brendon McCullum’s appointment, here’s what England’s managing director said:

“I’m delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles now with England. I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket. Being able to align all teams now is particularly exciting and we look forward to taking on all challenges that come our way,” Rob Key said.

“For the last two years, constant clashes between formats have made it challenging for the white-ball environment; fortunately, these are easing starting from January.ย The timing of the schedule (from January) will allow him to dedicate the necessary focus to both roles, and we’re confident this restructure will bring out the best in our players and coaching staff.” he added.

England have performed very badly in the last two ICC tournaments. They were knocked out of the group stage in the ODI World Cup 2023 in India and were knocked out by India in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024 as well.
