England’s Premier batter, Joe Root, has been in sensational form in Test cricket. He scored his 35th Test century in the opening Test match against Pakistan in Multan. He also became England’s leading run scorer in Test cricket and stands at number five in the list of all time leading run scorers in Test cricket. Root needs 3000 more runs to go past Sachin Tendulkar’s run tally in Test cricket. Meanwhile, former England captain, Michael Vaughan, feels that Root can only go past Tendulkar on one condition.
Vaughan feels that Root will not retire early like Alastair Cook given his love for the game. If Root manages to play till he is 40 just like Anderson, he will definitely go past Sachin Tendulkar’s run tally in Test cricket.
“Joe’s love of the game means he will not be like Alastair Cook. Cook retired six years ago, at almost exactly the same age – 33 – that Joe is now. But I see Joe going into his forties, like Anderson has. If he plays as long as I am sure, he will overtake Sachin Tendulkar and be the leading Test run-scorer,” wrote Vaughan in his column for The Telegraph.

Tendulkar has scored 15,291 runs in 200 Test matches, while Joe Root recently crossed the 12,500-run mark in his 147th Test match. Vaughan praised Joe Root by stating that Root has already cemented his status as a legendary figure in cricket, particularly for England. According to Vaughan, Root has surpassed all previous English batsmen in terms of excellence across various formats of the game (like Test matches, One Day Internationals, and T20 cricket). Vaughan stressed that Root’s incredible performance stats, or ‘the runs to show for it’, are clear evidence of his greatness, suggesting that Root’s achievements and skill make him the best batsman England has ever produced.
