Mohammad Amir, the left-arm pace bowler from Pakistan, has officially bid farewell to international cricket after playing his final match in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. By the time of his debut, he had emerged as one of the most sought-after pace bowling talents globally.
The pacer made his debut in 2009 against England at the Kennington Oval in London, taking the wicket of English opener Ravi Bopara. Under his exceptional bowling performances, the Pakistan cricket team clinched the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy, with his contributions playing a pivotal role in their success on the global stage.
Apart from his successful cricketing career, he was accused of involvement in a spot-fixing scandal, where he was alleged to have deliberately bowled pre-planned no-balls during a Test match. Following an ICC tribunal investigation in February 2011, he was handed a five-year ban. Admitting to the charges, he was later sentenced to six months in prison by Southwark Crown Court.
He stated, “After careful consideration, I have taken the difficult decision to retire from international cricket. These decisions are never easy but are inevitable. I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan Cricket to new heights. Representing my country has been and always will be the greatest honour of my life.
