BBL: The Melbourne Renegades faced off against the Perth Scorchers in a BBL match on December 23 at the Marvel Stadium in Docklands. The stadium is special as it has a roof and it was closed during this match. On the fifth ball of the 10th over, Scorchers’ batter Connolly tried to go big against Kane Richardson. The ball went high up in the air and struck the closed roof. The ball then fell down and hit Richardson on his finger.
The incident caught the attention of the fans on social media. The on-field umpire signaled it as a dead ball and asked Richardson to bowl it yet again. Earlier, there was an existent rule in the BBL that was made by Cricket Australia that when the ball goes up and hits the roof of the stadium, then it will be signaled as a six. However, that rule has been changed now.
This incident was going to be rare. However, in a 2023 BBL match, the ball hit the roof twice in a single game. Hence, CA changed the rule, and now it states that when the ball hits the roof, then it will be called a dead ball.
