The BCCI is set to bring back a rule in the IPL that was existent between 2008 and 2021. The rule was removed after the 2021 season, because no franchise made use of it. Now, as per reports, BCCI is set to bring it back again because Chennai Super Kings, in the recent meeting with IPL governing Council, requested to bring it back in order to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player.
The rule states that if a player has retired in international cricket for 5 years, the franchise can retain him as uncapped player. CSK could retain Dhoni as an uncapped player and retain their main important players as capped players.
“There is a bright possibility of the rule coming back. It was discussed at length during the meeting last month and could well be brought back when the player regulations are announced,” a well-placed source said.
Will MS Dhoni participate in the upcoming IPL 2025?
MS Dhoni had earlier mentioned that it’s too early to decide whether he will play in the upcoming IPL season. He explained that the decision will depend on various factors, such as the rules and decisions regarding player retention.
Dhoni emphasized that since these rules are not finalized yet, he hasn’t made a decision. When the guidelines are clear, he will consider his options, keeping in mind what’s best for the team.
“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,” Dhoni had said.

Dhoni has been CSK’s main player since the inception of the IPL in 2008. The former India and CSK captain has led Chennai Super Kings to a record 5 IPL titles. Ahead of the start of IPL 2024, he handed the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad and rolled back the years with his explosive finishes. Dhoni’s mere presence creates huge fandom all over India for CSK and also brings brand deals to the franchise. So, CSK will try to keep him as long as possible.
