"If you’re not being picked for your Shield team..", David Warner rubbishes Glenn Maxwell's interest of being part of the Australia Test squad against Sri Lanka

Australian all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell has been an important part of the limited overs set-up of the Men in Yellow. However, he has not cracked his career in Test cricket for the Aussies. Maxwell wants to be part of the Australian Test team for the upcoming Test series in Sri Lanka. The all-rounder played in the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland earlier in the year but has not been part of any other game.

Former Australian opener, David Warner has opined that Maxwell does not deserve to get his spot in the Australian Test team. He feels that if the player is not even picked or selected in his Shield team then he does not deserve a spot in the national team. Warner stated that Maxwell does not deserve to be part of the Test squad unless he is playing in all the long format games in club cricket.

“If you’re not being picked for your Shield team, then why do you deserve it? You’ve got to actually want it, to want to play four-day cricket. Unless he’s putting his hand up, he’s playing all the club cricket stuff and all that, to want to play Test cricket. He in my (opinion), doesn’t deserve that opportunity,” Warner told Code Sport.

David Warner wants Glenn Maxwell to work hard in domestic cricket

Warner feels that a player can’t just come up and show his interest in playing any format without working hard in domestic cricket to play in that format.

“I just don’t think you can keep putting your hand up to say, ‘I want to play just that.’ You know, it’s like me saying I just want to play in Australia, like you’ve gotta be seen to be wanting to do the work grind it out and do that,” he added.

Maxwell has been part of seven Test matches in his career and has scored 339 runs at a below par average of 26.07. He last featured in a Test match for Australia against Bangladesh in 2017. Adam Zampa has also shown his interest to be part of the Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Australia are currently in the middle of the five-match Test series at home against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. After losing the first Test by 295 runs in Perth, they made a stunning comeback to win the second Test by 10 wickets. The third Test is set to start at the Gabba in Brisbane on December 14.
