One of India’s most promising young cricketers, Shubman Gill is a right-handed batter known for his elegant stroke play and remarkable consistency. He has seamlessly transitioned into international cricket, excelling across formats with a composed technique and an aggressive yet controlled approach.
His ability to adapt to different conditions and anchor innings makes him a future mainstay in India’s batting lineup. With a strong temperament, exceptional hand-eye coordination, and an ever-improving game, Gill has the potential to become one of the modern greats of Indian cricket, particularly in Tests and ODIs, while also evolving into a dynamic T20 player.
Former India cricketer and batting coach, Sanjay Bangar recalled about Shubman Gill’s first net session with the senior national team. He recalled how Gill’s impressive batting against throwdown specialists caught the attention of coach Ravi Shastri.
He stated, “The first glimpse of Shubman Gill we had during his first net session for India, there is a tradition in India that during the nets session, if you want that approval, you will have to do well against throwdown specialists, who bowl really fast. And unhone uss nets session mein, jo ek screen test hota hena, aise patakhe bajaye the. Ravi Shastri was like, ek taiyaar player mil gaya humein. Such was his first impact.”
Shubman Gill made his international debut in ODIs on January 31, 2019, against New Zealand, and his Test debut on December 26, 2020, against Australia at the MCG, where he played a crucial role in India’s historic series win. He later made his T20I debut on January 3, 2023, against Sri Lanka.
In recent times, Gill has established himself as a key batter for India across formats. He had a stellar 2023, finishing as the highest run-scorer in ODIs with 1,584 runs, including a double century against New Zealand. His IPL 2023 season was equally remarkable, where he topped the charts with 890 runs for the Gujarat Titans, earning the Orange Cap. However, his form dipped slightly towards the end of 2023 and early 2024, particularly in Tests, where he struggled to convert starts into big scores. Despite this, he remains a crucial part of India’s future, with the potential to dominate world cricket in the coming years.
