Former England World Cup winning captain, Eoin Morgan wants Joe Root and Ben Stokes to be part of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 which is scheduled in Pakistan. He stated that Stokes has already revealed that his decision of comeback will depend on Head Coach, Brendon McCullum’s intentions.
Morgan went on to say that if England needs to win the upcoming ICC tournament, then they have to play their best team. Morgan feels that Stokes and Root are part of the best team of England and so they need to be part of the Champions Trophy. The former England Captain feels that the younger players will get a chance to play in the upcoming series ahead of the Champions Trophy as when the big players arrive their chances will be reduced.
What did Eoin Morgan say?
Morgan said: “Ben Stokes has already saidย that he hasn’t had the call yet from Baz as to whether he will play or no. If that call comes, obviously he would love to play. In my eyes, they’ve got to come into a major world tournament and look to win it, and that means trying to find the best team – and for me, Stokes and Root are in that best team. The younger players playing in the upcoming series against the West Indies, and then coming here [India] in February, the opportunity is there in front of your face. And that opportunity can be quickly taken away when those big names come back.”
Stokes and Root were part of the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023 in India. England are knocked out of the group stage and could not qualify for the semi final. England also put up very bad performance in the T20 World Cup in 2024 and were beaten by India in the semi final in Guyana.
