Harbhajan Singh recalls an interesting incident involving MS Dhoni and Shardul Thakur

Former India off spinner, Harbhajan Singh, recently revealed an interesting story concerning the former Indian captain MS Dhoni and the India all-rounder, Shardul Thakur. He recalled an incident when he was fielding at short leg and MS Dhoni was keeping. Shardul was the bowler and he was hit by Kane Williamson down the ground.

He bowled the same delivery yet again on the next delivery and he was hit at the same place. Then, Bhajji went to Dhoni to ask Thakur to change his length. Dhoni told him that Shardul needs to know how to react, respond by himself and learn in his own way not from instructions from the captain.

“I remember a game where I was fielding at the short fine leg and MS Dhoni was keeping. Shardul Thakur was bowling, and the first ball, Kane Williamson, hit him down the ground for a boundary. Next ball, same length, and Williamson played the same shot. I went to MS and asked him to tell Shardul to try and bowl differently. MS said to me, ‘Paji If I tell him now, then he will never learn. Let him learn by himself.’ His thought process was maar khayega to khud sikhega ( he will learn if he gets hit). Just like a kid grows up,” Harbhajan said on the podcast,” Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli.”

Dhoni is regarded as one of the greatest captains that the game has ever seen. He is the only captain who has won all three ICC trophies. Dhoni was known for his cool and calm demeanor as a leader. He stayed relaxed and was not very agitated on the field when the bowlers got hit for a boundary.

He let the bowlers learn in their own way by committing mistakes. Rarely, does he show his emotions on the field and that has been his biggest strength in his captaincy career.

Dhoni will most probably be seen in IPL 2025 for Chennai Super kings. However, it all boils down to the retention rules.
