As per reports, Chennai Super Kings have asked for an old rule to be back in the upcoming IPL auction, during the recent meeting between IPL franchises and the governing council. The rule will help them retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player in the upcoming IPL and retain the core group of players as capped players. The rule was prevalent in IPL 2008-2021 and was, later, removed by the BCCI because no franchise used it.
The rule states that if a player has retired from international cricket for over 5 years, he can be retained as an uncapped player by the franchise. Now, how much money will Dhoni lose if he is retained as an uncapped player?
An uncapped Indian player can be retained for INR 4 Crores as per the existing IPL retention rules. CSK retained him for 12 crores INR before the IPL 2022 mega auction. So, MS Dhoni will roughly lose 8 crores INR if he is retained as an uncapped player.
MS Dhoni has talked about his chances of featuring in the upcoming IPL
Dhoni recently talked about his chances of playing in IPL 2025. He stated that his availability will depend on the rules and regulations of the IPL 2025 auction. Dhoni has been part of CSK since the inception of the IPL. The former Indian captain retired from international cricket on 15th August 2020. However, he has continued to feature for the franchise.

He stepped down from captaincy ahead of IPL 2024 and handed it over to Ruturaj Gaikwad. CSK will definitely want to keep him given that he attracts massive fanbase all over India. Dhoni played some beautiful cameos in several matches in IPL 2024 despite suffering from a knee injury.
