Recently, a meeting between the IPL franchises and the governing council happened. In the meeting, rules regarding the upcoming IPL mega auction and various other things were discussed. One such thing was increasing the number of matches from 75 to 84 matches.
With two new teams included in the IPL since 2022, the total number of matches should have been 94 (with one home and one away game), but it has remained 75. BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah has broken his silence on this matter.
He stated that there has been no confirmation as of now. Moreover, he said that player’s workload and rest should be taken into consideration and after that the BCCI will decide.
Shah said:
“Nothing is confirmed. We will collectively decide. We’ve to factor in the workload of the players and the window also. It’s in the contract but it is up to the BCCI to decide,”
Jay Shah opens up about the retention list of the upcoming IPL auction
There was heavy discussion between the franchises regarding how many players can be retained in the upcoming IPL auction. As per reports, the franchises were not in the same page regarding the matter.
Some wanted 4, some wanted 8 and some even wanted 10. Shah stated that the views of every franchises have been taken into consideration. However, the final decision will be made by the BCCI only. Franchises who have a settled side did not want the mega auction but franchises who don’t have wants a mega auction.
Shah added:
“We’ve heard the views of all the franchises. For us a minority view is as important as the majority opinion. Ultimately the office-bearers (of the BCCI) will decide. Those who have a good side said there is no need for the big auction and those without a good side wanted the big auction,”
As per reports, the official declaration will be made by the BCCI by the end of the August. It will be a fascinating thing to see what decisions the BCCI make on the following suggestions. However, it will definitely be a very tough thing given the franchises are not on the same page.
