Team India are in a disastrous state, currently, in Test cricket after the 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand. Indian batters have failed miserably against the Kiwi spinners on turning tracks.

Their chances of making it to the WTC final have been more or less over as they will need to win four out of the five Tests against Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 away from home.

Meanwhile, amidst all this, former England captain, Kevin Pietersen, has shared an old quote from former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting, on his X profile.

He talked about a statement from Ponting which explains that if you average near about 35 in Test cricket then you are not good enough to play in the longest format of the game for your country.

He wrote: “Good state players these days are averaging 35; if you were averaging 35 when I was playing, your dad would go and buy you a basketball or a footy and tell you to play that.”

Indian batters have suffered a decline in Test averages in the last five years

Indian batters with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are featuring in the quota of 35 average in the Test team. So, it feels like it is an indirect dig at these batters who have failed to put up consistent performances in the longest format of the game.

Indian fans have been tremendously upset after their team suffered a 3-0 whitewash at home. This was their first Test series loss at home in 12 years and this was the first time that India have been whitewashed at home in a Test series at home since starting to play Test cricket.

Lot of Indian batters have suffered a decrease in their batting average in the last four to five years playing on wickets which have been difficult to bat on.

Hence, they have suffered a huge criticism for their performances with the bat. Now, it remains to be seen if they can turn it around in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
