Reports and speculations have suggested that Jay Shah might probably take over as ICC Chairman and Rohan Jaitley is in talks to replace him.
Though Shah has not given an official confirmation on whether he will apply for the post of ICC Chairman, the 35-year-old has the support of 15 of the 16 members of the ICC board. However, August 27, which is today, is the last day to file the nomination for the post.
If Shah files the nomination and is appointed as the ICC Chairman, then the biggest query that awaits us is who will be the likely candidate for being chosen as BCCI’s next president. The foremost name that has emerged is late Union Minister Arun Jaitley’s son, Rohan Jaitley.
Who is Rohan Jaitley?
Rohan, the son of Arun Jaitley, followed in the footsteps of his father to become a lawyer and handle cases in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.
Four years back in 2020, Rohan was appointed as the new President of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, where he was re-elected unopposed for the second term. This was likely due to his father’s long legacy, where he served in the office for 14 years.
Under him, the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium hosted the first-ever Delhi Premier League as well as a set of World Cup matches. However, besides his experience in administration, one of the main reasons Rohan can emerge as the BCCI secretary is due to his father’s great influence in the BCCI, where he served as the vice-president.
Though he might face some competition from the likes of CAB’s former president, Avishke Dalmiya, Punjab’s Dilsher Khanna, Chhattisgarh’s Prabhtej Bhatia, and Goa’s Vipul Phadke.
However, all depends on Shah’s likely decision, which he will make by the end of the day over his contention for the post of chairman of the world governing body, the ICC. Moreover, even the chances of BCCI appointing an absolute new face for the post of BCCI secretary cannot be ruled out.
