Niroshan Dickwella gets suspended for failing dope test

Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella has suffered a suspension for failing dope test conducted by Sri Lanka’s Anti-Doping Agency during this year’s edition of the Lanka Premier League.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board explained in a press release that they are working with the Ministry of Sports and following World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines to keep cricket free from banned substances. They mentioned that, along with the Ministry of Sports and the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA), they conduct random drug tests during domestic tournaments to protect the sport from doping violations.

“This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, is aimed at ensuring that cricket remains free from the influence of prohibited substances,” the release stated. 

“SLC, together with the Ministry of Sports and SLADA, conducts these tests during domestic tournaments randomly to safeguard the sport against anti-doping violations,” it added.

Niroshan Dickwella ld the Galle Marvels during this edition of the LPL 2024. He has played 41 matches in LPL and has scored 799 runs with 6 half-centuries. He has played 54 Test matches for Sri Lanka and has scored 2757 runs at an average of 31 with 22 half centuries.

In ODI cricket, he has featured in 55 games and has scored 1604 runs at an average of 31.4 and a strike-rate of 93.4 with 2 centuries and 9 half-centuries. In T20I cricket, he has played 28 games, scoring 480 runs at an average of 18.5 and a strike rate of 11.1.

He made his last appearance for Sri Lanka in 2023. Earlier, he also suffered a ban of 1 year with Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka for breaching the COVID-19 protocol in 2021.
