Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who is regarded as one of the best modern-day fast bowlers, opens about his journey from the start of his career. The 31-year-old has a diverse and unconventional bowling action, which made coaches think that he can last long.

Jasprit Bumrah has been the backbone of the Indian cricket team in all three formats of the game, consistently delivering match-winning performances. Renowned for his deadly yorkers, precise line and length, and ability to adapt to different conditions, Bumrah has played a pivotal role in India’s success across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

His capacity to bowl under pressure, especially in death overs, makes him an irreplaceable asset in white-ball cricket, while his skill in exploiting swing and seam movement has made him equally effective in red-ball cricket.

During the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia, Jasprit Bumrah opened up on his journey and struggles he faced in the beginning of his career.

He stated, “I don’t think a lot of people believed in me because they thought that this bowling action will not last for long. He’ll play for six months, seven months. So not really a lot of people worked on me or, you know, gave me inputs that, you know, I think this is useful or you should stop doing that because. I don’t think they saw a lot of merit.”

The fast bowler added, “I think that worked out in my favour because… I was self-reliant then, and I had to have a lot of self-belief and find out solutions on my own. So yes, nobody tried to change me, but nobody gave any extra solutions. So that worked out for the best in the greater interest, but then that helped me develop, you know.”

Jasprit Bumrah revealed that he never received formal coaching at the start of his career. He developed and learned the bowling action on his own, watching the television. The legendary pacer started his career at the age of 16–17 years.

The talented bowler further shared that he concentrated on strengthening his mental toughness and relied on his own belief to overcome challenges. Bumrah honed his natural talent without adhering to conventional techniques, instead focusing on finding solutions and evolving as a bowler.
