Rohit Sharma’s future in Mumbai Indians set-up for the upcoming IPL season is still not clear. Veteran Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, has recently talked about Sharma’s future in Mumbai Indians.
Ashwin, in his recent video, stated that Sharma will continue playing for Mumbai Indians as a batter despite not being the captain. He feels that money does not matter to the Indian captain at this moment of his career.
“Even if you think like Rohit, it’s not wrong at all. I don’t want any headache. I have been a captain for India. I have captained Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it’s super. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn’t matter for some of those players. That’s the thing,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
Rohit Sharma was sacked as Mumbai Indians captain ahead of IPL 2024
Rohit has been a legend and a sensational leader for the Mumbai Indians. He has led the franchise to five IPL titles and has also been the highest run scorer for MI in the IPL. However, all the fuss about his future in MI started in the last IPL, when Mumbai Indians bought back Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans and appointed him as the captain.
There was widespread criticism of the franchise and also trolling of Pandya. Fans were left disheartened with the fact that Sharma, despite being the Indian captain and a legendary player for MI, was sacked from captaincy without any proper discussions.
Moreover, reports of rift between Sharma and the franchise surfaced on the internet. It was said that the hitman won’t continue in the franchise for the upcoming IPL and MI would have to release the star batter ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Sharma joined MI in 2011 and since then, he has gone on to play 199 IPL matches, scoring 5084 runs at an average of 29.39 and a strike rate of 129.86. He has smashed one century and 34 half-centuries during the period.
