The Indian Test captain, Rohit Sharma, recently became father for the second time as he and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, were blessed with a baby boy. Hence, the Indian captain will not be available for the first Test of the five-match Test series against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 in Perth starting from November 22. In his place, Jasprit Bumrah will be captaining the side in Perth.
Reports say that Sharma will join the Indian team in Perth on November 24 when the first Test will be running. It was not sure when will he arrive in Perth, but Board Of Cricket Control In India (BCCI) have now officially revealed his arrival Down Under.
The Indian captain is set to be available for the second Test match of the series in Adelaide which will be a Day/Night affair with the Pink Ball. The Test match will kickstart on December 6 and Sharma will play a two day Day/Night match against Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra from November 30.
Rohit Sharma needs to come back to form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Sharma hasn’t been in good form with the bat in the three-match home Test series against New Zealand and the two-match home Test series against Bangladesh. Moreover, the team under him suffered a 3-0 disastrous defeat against New Zealand at home which was the first Test series loss for India since 2012 and also the first whitewash suffered at home in a Test series since Team India started playing Test cricket. His place in the side is definitely under question and hence needs a strong comeback from the captain in BGT.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 features five Test matches between India and Australia, starting November 22, 2024, in Perth. Other matches are scheduled in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, with the final Test concluding on January 7, 2025. This series is crucial for WTC standings.
