Former Indian opener, Sunil Gavaskar, has heaped praise on Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, for crediting India’s legendary off spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, on his 100th Test and allowing him to lead the team onto the field when India faced England at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala at the start of the year.
Gavaskar said that it was the hallmark of a legendary captain who was ready to step aside and give the credit to the man who served that at that moment of time.
โRohit acknowledged Ashwinโs contributions by letting him lead the team out to field in the all-rounderโs 100th Test, a hallmark of a skipper confident and relaxed in his own skin and ready to step aside and give the accolades to the achiever.โ Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his collumn for Mid-Day.
Ravichandran Ashwin was sensational in his 100th Test match
Ashwin was sensational in that Test match as well as he scalped nine wickets in that game to lead India to victory. The off spinner is India’s second highest wicket-taker in Tests with 522 wickets so far after the legendary Anil Kumble with 619 wickets.
Currently, Ashwin is in the midst of the two match Test series against Bangladesh. In the first Test, he scalped ten wickets in the game and also scored a match winning century in the first innings of the game.
Meanwhile, Sharma is leading the Indian Team in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-24 cycle. India will play three more Test matches at home against New Zealand before flying to Australia to play a five match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India will look to qualify for the WTC final for the third consecutive time.
India are currently leading 1-0 in the two match Test series against Bangladesh. Only 35 overs have been bowled in the second Test match in Kanpur on the first day and the next two days have been completely washed out.
