Australian superstar Steve Smith has returned to his ideal No. 4 position after testing himself as an opener since last summer as a replacement for David Warner. The resilient batter proved his worth for the team by playing various good knocks. The 35-year-old displayed why he is one of the reliable and formidable batsmen in modern cricket, by scoring an unbeaten 91 at Gabba.
“It was good fun having a crack at something new, batting up top. I still feel I could do a job there, for sure. Obviously, there’s a spot there now with Greeny out, and I think just conversations we had after New Zealand with particularly Marnus and Uzi, they hated me up top, to be honest,”. Smith was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.
Steve Smith Struggles to find form, of late
The experienced batter is yet to score runs before the most anticipated cricket series of 2024, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In a Sheffield Shield match at the MCG, Smith was caught behind for three in the first innings and got a duck in the second. His underwhelming domestic performances raise concerns for Australia, before the tour against India.
“I kind of know what I need now and … there’s obviously going to be some good centre wickets with our bowlers bowling in Perth as well, in similar conditions, I suppose, to what you’re going to get at Optus Stadium. So we’ll see, but (it is) probably going to be enough.” He said
Smith has been a crucial player for the Australian side in multiple formats from a long time. He recently participated in an ODI series against England, delivering a satisfying performance throughout the matches. He displayed his exceptional batting skills, contributing vital runs and demonstrating his ability to build innings under pressure. His solid performances included key partnerships that helped stabilize the Australian lineup.
Steve Smith is eagerly anticipating the upcoming series against India, where he aims to showcase his skills against one of the strongest teams in world cricket. As both teams prepare to face off, cricket fans are looking forward to witnessing Smith’s ability to navigate India’s bowling attack and potentially lead Australia to victory in crucial matches. This series promises to be an exciting contest between two cricketing powerhouses.
