Three super overs for the first time in the Bengaluru Blasters vs Hubli Tigers game in the Maharaja Trophy

There had been no super overs in the history of the Maharaja Trophy until the match between Bengaluru Blasters and Hubli Tigers on August 23, 2024. There was a historic event during the game as three super overs had to be held in order to get a result. This was the first time that a T20 game has seen three super overs in the same game.

Hubli Tigers finally emerged triumphant in the game after they chased down 13 in the final super over. The game was held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. It proved to be the second tied game at the venue as India and Afghanistan had to play two super overs to get a result in a T20I game on this ground on January 27.

Hubli Tigers batted first in the game and out up a score of 164 runs. Bengaluru stumbled during the run chase and managed to level the scores in the end. Bengaluru needed 2 runs to win the game in 5 balls with 3 wickets in hand. However, the game still went to the super over as Bengaluru scored just 1 run in those 5 balls and lost two wickets.

What happened in the Bengaluru in the three super overs?

Bengaluru scored 10 runs while batting first in the first super over. Lavish Kaushal for Bengaluru defended the 10 runs and the match proceeded to the second super over. Hubli needed to score 2 runs off the final delivery. However, Manish Pandey skied one in the air, but Lavish dropped the catch and the super over was tied.

In the second super over, Hubli Tigers scored 8 runs while batting first. Gnaneshwer Naveen bowled the over for Bengaluru and did not concede a single boundary in the over. Vidwath Kaverappa bowled the super over for the Tigers and defended the eight runs. The scores were tied in the second super over and the match proceeded to the final super over.

Bengaluru scored 12 runs while batting first in the third super over. Hubli needed to score 4 runs off the final delivery, and Manvanth Kumar smashed the boundary off the delivery to take Hubli to a thrilling win in the game.
