Tilka Varma came in to bat for India at number three in place of Suryakumar Yadav and scored a century in the third T20I of the four-match T20 series against South Africa in Centurion. He scored 107 runs from 56 balls with eight fours and seven sixes. Varma had a strike-rate of 191.07 and smashed his maiden century in international cricket.
Varma blew a flying kiss after he reached his first century. After the game, he said that the kiss was for the Indian T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, who gave him an opportunity to bat at number in this game.
“It was for ‘SKY’ because he gave me the chance to bat at number three. I love batting at that position, and I wanted to repay the trust he placed in me,” Varma said.
Tilak Varma was overjoyed to get his century in a winning cause
Tilak Varma smashed his maiden T20I century against South Africa on Wednesday
Tilak Varma expressed his overwhelming joy and satisfaction after the match, highlighting the emotional peak of achieving a personal milestone in a crucial game. He admitted he was at a loss for words to describe how he felt about winning, especially since it fulfilled his dream of playing for India. He credited the timing of his century, saying it came precisely when the team needed it most.
Varma gave special thanks to the team captain, Suryakumar Yadav, for trusting him with the crucial number three batting position and encouraging him to play freely. His gratitude was further emphasized when he turned and smiled at Yadav during the statement.
He also discussed his approach to the game, focusing on sticking to his fundamental techniques.
He noted that the pitch was challenging initially with its inconsistent pace, making it tough for new batsmen, particularly after teammate Abhishek was dismissed. Tilak mentioned his strategy was to play a long innings, looking to build a significant partnership which he evidently managed to do, contributing significantly to the team’s victory.
“It was a difficult chance but I am happy we won the game. I cannot put it in words. It was my dream to play for the country and the hundred came at the right time when the team needed it. All credit to Mr. Suryakumar Yadav, our captain. He gave me the opportunity to bat at 3 and told me to express myself. Thanks to him again (turns back at SKY and smiles). I just backed my basics. Pitch was two paced to start with and it wasn’t easy for the new batters coming in when Abhishek got out. I was ready to bat long and was waiting for one partnership,” added Varma.
