Former Indian captain Virat Kohli, who faced challenges in converting his starts during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is expected to participate in county cricket after the IPL 2025. He will be a part of the county cricket to prepare ahead of the Test series against England in summer 2025.
After the commencement of the Australian Test series, India coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the significance of domestic cricket as a foundation for success on the international stage. The IPL 2025 final is scheduled for May 25, while the first Test against England begins at Leeds on June 20. If RCB makes it to the IPL final, Kohli will have approximately 14 days to play County cricket and adapt to English conditions.
Kohli’s recent dip in form has only intensified the scrutiny. Since his brilliant century in Perth, he has struggled, appearing a shadow of his prime self, hindered by self-doubt and poor shot selection.
A County stint could be the ideal solution. Time spent in English conditions would help him refine his skills and rebuild his confidence. It’s not just about improving technique but also about regaining mental clarity and focus.
The Test series against England will be crucial for senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as it could play a defining role in shaping their future in the red-ball format. With both players nearing the twilight of their careers, their performances in the series may determine their longevity in the Test arena and their continued relevance in India’s plans for the longest format of the game.
Former Australian captain backs Virat Kohli’s skills and abilities
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has expressed his support for the struggling Virat Kohli, stating that if he were the team captain, he would stand by the batter and advocate for his place in the side despite his recent struggles in Test cricket.
He said, “If I was Captain of my team that Virat Kohli was in, even though I know he didn’t make as many runs as he would have liked, I am fighting for him to stay in the team and play as long as he wants.”
Clarke added, “Sachin was a different player. I know he didn’t play a cover drive and went on to score a double hundred at the SCG but Virat Kohli is not Sachin. Kohli’s biggest strength is bat on ball. He has a different playing style.”
